Beijing 2008 Olympics Closing Ceremony

Beijing Olympics Closing Ceremony

It’s over. Yesterday’s Beijing 2008 Olympics closing ceremony and handover to Britain showed a glimpse of what Britain has to offer in the London 2012 Olympics. And boy, does it suck lemons compared to the Beijing 2008 Olympics.

Beginning right with the London 2012 Olympics Logo which looks like something from the portfolio of a first year design student. It’s strange because the UK is known for having first-class graphic designs with many top international award-winning design firms.

If their segment during the Beijing 2008 Olympics Closing Ceremony is a glimpse of what London 2012 will be like, you will most likely see a West End type musical on a larger scale. Expect all the cliched Brit elements – brollies, bowl hats, double-decker buses, punks, the London tube – if even a run-down public transport system is used, you can tell how desperate they must have been.

Running out of Brit cliches to include in their segment, a whole mish-mash of popular icons, from currently popular singer, Leona Lewis being teamed up with Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page to sing a few chords from Whole Lotta Love, football star David Beckham kicking a ball into the performers arena and some other equally meaningless segments such as people dancing with umbrellas were thrown into the half-cooked mix.

IOC member, former British track-and-field Olympic sensation, Sebastian Coe has been quoted as saying the London 2012 Olympics will “take a different approach”. He’s basically setting us up so that we won’t be disappointed with the London ceremonies because London is not capable of producing anything remotely close to the kind of grandeur and spectacle that was the Beijing Opening Ceremony.

Come to think of it, there never was and highly unlikely ever will be an Olympics opening ceremony like Beijing 2008. Relive some of the amazing moments here.
