In an unprecedented move, the prominent Los Angeles Film Critics Association (LAFCA) has chosen the Disney/Pixar animation Wall-E as Best Movie Of 2008 and The Dark Knight as runner-up.

The Broadcast Film Critics Association chose Milk, about slain gay activist Harvey Milk, and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, a romance starring Brad Pitt. Wall-E is also in its list of top 10 best movies for 2008.

Best actress nominees included Angelina Jolie in Changeling, Cate Blanchett for Benjamin Button and Meryl Streep in Doubt, among others.

BFCA nominees for best actor included Sean Penn for Milk, Frank Langella in Frost/Nixon, Brad Pitt for Benjamin Button, and Mickey Rourke in The Wrestler.

The two groups represent key indications of what the Academy Awards will be like because early honors help draw the attention of Academy Award voters.

The LAFCA’s choice of an animated film is a surprise choice as critics usually favor real-life actors in human drama over humor and animation. But Wall-E is such an excellent film on all counts managing to bring heart, soul and humor and is a big hit with both critics and audiences, bringing in a healthy $490 million at worldwide box offices.

Go, Wall-E!!
