Michael Jackson Needs A Lung?

Author Ian Halperin might trying to hype up his upcoming Michael Jackson biography, but he claims that Michael Jackson may need a lung transplant as the former prince of pop is suffering from a potentially fatal genetic illness called alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency.

The disease has deteriorated to a point that “his quality of life is severely diminished,” Halperin tells In Touch magazine, so much so that he’s “barely able to speak” and has lost 95 percent of the vision in his left eye.

“He’s had [the deficiency] for years, but it’s gotten worse,” Halperin told the magazine. “He needs a lung transplant but may be too weak to go through with it…[But] it’s the [gastrointestinal] bleeding that is the most problematic part. It could kill him.”

Dr. Len Horovitz, a pulmonary specialist at New York’s Lenox Hill Hospital who treated Jackson in 1999 says that the “relatively rare genetic disorder…becomes apparent in young adulthood and early middle age.”

“The liver can also be affected, causing cirrhosis. The disease produces an early-onset emphysema, just as one might see in an older smoker. Treatment for mild or moderate cases involves infusions of a specific medication. In advanced stages, a lung transplant may be necessary.

“Since this is a genetic disorder, other members of the Jackson family must be tested for this genetic variant,” added Horovitz, who would not say whether Jackson actually has the disorder.

The Jackson camp has finally released a statement through their PR firm Scoop Marketing: “Concerning this author’s allegations, we would hope in the future that legitimate media will not continue to be exploited by such an obvious attempt to promote this unauthorized ‘biography.”

“The writer’s wild allegations concerning Mr. Jackson’s health are a total fabrication,” the statement said. “Mr. Jackson is in fine health and finalizing negotiations with a major entertainment company and television network for both a world tour and a series of specials and appearances.”
