Myanmar “royal” wedding
While the people of Myanmar are languishing in poverty, Myanmar’s military ruler spares no expense for his youngest daughter’s wedding. In grand surroundings resplendent with gold trimmings and plentiful blooms attended by hundreds of guests, the couple is filmed at their lavish wedding reception, cutting a 5-tiered wedding cake and in their wedding room next to ornate gold furniture and a ceiling-high red canopy gold-trimmed bed. The bride is decked out in a constellation of diamonds on her beehive style hair, rows of diamond necklaces, bracelets and rings.
Reports have stated that gifts of over US$50 million were received - this amount is 3 times the 2005 health budget for a population of 53 million.
