After speculation by celebrity gossip sites, it has been confirmed that singer Chris Brown has been charged with assault on his girlfriend, singer Rihanna.

Brown, 19, was taken into custody at 6:30 p.m. and was booked for criminal threat at 7:41 p.m. He posted $50,000 bail and was released. This caused both Brown and Rihanna to bail on their scheduled Grammy performance at the last minute although it was not known at that time that the victim was Rihanna. Both had received nominations: Grammy Awards 2009 Winners.

Police say Brown and a woman were seen arguing in a vehicle and when the argument escalated, they both got out of the car.

“After stopping his car, Brown and the woman got out and the argument escalated,” the police said. “The woman suffered visible injuries and identified Brown as her attacker.” The 911 call was apparently made by Rihanna herself.

However, Brown has already fled the scene when police arrived and they found only the victim.

According to TMZ, here’s how police described Rihanna’s injuries:

..Rihanna’s injuries were severe — two ‘huge contusions’ which swelled up on both sides of her forehead. We’re told she also suffered ‘a bloody lip and nose.’

[T]he contusions ‘look like an MMA fighter or something … [It] looked like she was growing devil’s horns.’

We’ve also heard that Rihanna may have suffered bite wounds on one of her legs and arms, however, one source close to the situation tells us he doubts that is the case.”

Wrigley which has a gum endorsement deal with Chris Brown has temporarily suspended his ads “until the matter is resolved.”
