Internet knocked out in Asia

A 7.1 magnitude undersea earthquake off the southern coast of Taiwan on Tuesday damaged several fibre optic cables and disrupted telephone and internet connections for Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and Thailand. Taiwan is one of the major communication cable gateways to the US.

Traffic was diverted to other lines resulting in major traffic jams. Connecting to Yahoo, Google and MSN was impossible up til this morning where it seems like most sites are loading with some connections still patchy.

The first thing that got me suspicious there was something wrong was when I checked my email. There was no spam. And then I could not log on to my blog. This was not unusual, seeing as how my web host has been offline 3 times since I signed up in August. I was about to send in a support ticket when I realised that both Yahoo! and Google could not be found. There was definitely something big going down.

It was as if I had travelled back to 1989.
