A day at the zoo

I went to the zoo with my family on new year’s eve. It’s been at least 10 years since I visited the Singapore Zoo, reputedly one of the best in the world. I can’t say I am thrilled to see animals in captivity, no matter how natural the artificially created roaming area is but on the flipside, it does give me the opportunity to see real-life animals, such as the white tiger in the picture above, which I would otherwise get to see only in books and on television.

I would defintely have a tough time seeing a polar bear in tropical Singapore. These two bears are mother and child. The child polar bear was born in Singapore. He will be transferred to a German zoo when the mother bear dies as he will be all alone. This is expected to happen soon as the mother bear is already past her life expectancy. Animal activists have long protested keeping artic animals in a hot, humid climate like ours, sub zero air conditioning facilities notwithstanding.

This is what we had for lunch at one of the open-air restaurants. It’s normal fried vermicelli garnished with the usual bits of vegetables and mystery meat and two pieces of deep fried chicken drumlets. It costs S$6.90. That’s about 3 times the price of what something like this would’ve cost at regular foodstalls. As far as I could see, all food and drink items are about 3 times regular price.

We viewed the lion’s area behind glass and this particular lioness was especially co-operative. She was lazing about 30 metres away when we waved and yelled at her to come nearer. She obliged and strolled over very coolly to about 5 metres away from us so I was able to take this big picture of her. Thanks girl!
