Long queue doesn’t mean it’s good

emigrestudio- kim hock guan

This shop got the vote for the best tasting bak kwa in a recent newspaper report but look at the queue - barely 30 people as compared to favourites Lim Chee Guan where people started queueing up at 4am and 100-people queues are now part of legendary Chinese New Year folklore. I’ve always wondered if it’s a case of herd mentality - people like to assume that long queue equals the best. To be fair, I have not tasted Kim Hock Guan but will do so after Chinese New Year when prices are not at the crazy levels that they are now.

I’m somewhat in agreement with that particular report’s opinion as I find the regular bak kwa slices from Lim Chee Guan quite unspectacular, even though I do find its “loose” pieces very delicious. Also, I agree that Bee Cheng Hiang, described as the McDonalds of sliced barbeque pork, taste better than Lim Chee Guan regular slices.
