The Departed - Best Picture (Gimme a break)

The Departed is a remake of the Hong Kong film Infernal Affairs. The announcer wrongly said it is a Japanese film. Wow, how original. I’m sure Martin Scorsese deserved Best Director and even William Monahan deserved the award for “Best Writing, Screenplay Based on Material Previously Produced or Published”. But to give the Best Picture award to a film that is a remake and a recent one at that just smells of a cop out.

Little Miss Sunshine is, as expected, too light weight. Letters from Iwo Jima is in Japanese. Babel is Mexican. The Queen is British. So, the academy had no choice but to award The Departed. The academy is also trying to make it up to Martin Scorsese this time round by giving him a few major awards after having sidelined him for so many years.
