Melinda Doolittle all the way
If you still think Lakisha Jones is the one to beat in American Idol after listening to Melinda Doolittle’s rendition of “My Funny Valentine”, then you need to get your ears cleaned out.
Lakisha Jones sings in the powerhouse belting out style and she didn’t give any new interpretation to that tired standard “Midnight Train To Georgia”. Has there ever been an American Idol season where this song wasn’t sung? Like I said before, powerhouse isn’t everything. Melinda Doolittle on the other hand, gave possibly one of the best versions of “My Funny Valentine” EVAR. Period. Take a listen:

That is exactly my thoughts on it. I think Melinda is between an Aretha Franklin & Ella Fitzgerald. Beautiful singer.

Indeed…she’s the Ella of our time. There should be record producers lining up to offer her a recording contract. She’s wasting her talent on American Idol where I’m sure somewhere down the road, America will vote her off.

Yeah… I totally agree with you too. That performance was one of the best out of Top 12 segment for me… next to Mandisa and Anwar’s performance in previous AIs. Man I was blown away!

I just can’t get enough of Melinda’s rendition of “My Funny Valentine”. Even after watching the video for the umpteenth time, she still gives me goosebumps and puts a smile on my face!!

I think there are some really strong female singers this season. I see several of them as contenders.

Melinda’s vocals are nothing but refreshing. After hearing her on last night’s show, my only thought was.. this girl could be headlining at Vegas.. RIGHT NOW. What a humble person too. Years of being a backup singer and hard work have taught her the values of performing as 1 unit.
Good luck Melinda.

[...] It’s basically silly to have a specific theme each round which makes the contestants sing different music genres. In reality, hardly any pop singer sings across genres. I was a bit worried for Melinda Doolittle but being the pro that she is, she pulled off a Tina Turner inspired performance admirably. Jordin could not handle that definitive Bon Jovi anthemn Livin’ On A Prayer but somehow she managed to endear herself enough to audiences by being self-deprecating and avoided being voted out. [...]

[...] It was a tough night for everyone, even for the consummate pro that is Melinda Doolittle. It was the night where she received the harshest comments from all the judges, and rightly so. Firstly, BeeGees songs though great, are not exactly the easiest to sing since most of them are originally sung in falsetto. [...]

[...] I know lots of people think LaKisha Jones is a fantastic vocalist, but I beg to differ. Sure she has a powerhouse voice but she doesn’t really know how to interpret a song the way Melinda Doolittle does. And it looks like America knows that too, judging from the results. Blake Lewis has his own supporters because of his beatbox, but Melinda Doolittle has pure talent, not that she needs American Idol any longer now that her awesome talent has been heard. [...]
