Surprise elimination in American Idol

No, it’s not Sanjaya, hopeful though we may be; it’s Stephanie Edwards,(left) one of the stronger contenders in American Idol. Earlier, Sabrina Sloan (second from left) another favourite was also eliminated over other less outstanding vocalists. Of the top four strongest singers, only Melinda Doolittle and Lakisha Jones remain.

This makes Simon’s constant refrain that “this is a singing competition” ring rather hollow. Special guest, 60’s popstar Peter Noone from The Herman’s Hermits puts it more bluntly, although uncomfortably so, that “this is a voting competition”.

And so it certainly seems like it when people like Sanjaya, who should not even be in the top 12, is still going on strong. It could be his supporters, like the 13 year-old crying girl that cameras annonyingly keep focussing on, are out there in bigger numbers than we know. Or, as another blogger suggested, it could be all the call centres in India who have been supporting him all along.
