Thai king pardons Swiss man

tok12304120520-small.jpgThe Swiss man who was sentenced to 10 years’ jail for spray painting the Thai king’s portrait has been pardoned by the king himself. However the Swiss man, Oliver Rudolf Jufer, a long-time resident of Chiang Mai, will be deported back to Switzerland.

Following the sentence, people began posting even more insulting videos on YouTube, where a monkey’s head is pasted on the king, among other things. When the offending videos are taken down, twice as many are reposted.

Although I do feel that 10 years in jail is overly harsh, compared to “real” crimes, I understand the reasons behind this. But I am glad that King Bhumibol Adulyadej, in all his wisdom, pardoned the man who was drunk when he committed the act of disrespect. Also, since he is a foreigner, he probably could not fully understand the special relationship between the Thai people and her king, when in the west, monarchies are mostly tolerated, regularly lampooned and treated much like Hollywood celebrities rather than revered and loved, as is the Thai king.

Also, given the current unstable political situation which is costing Thailand in terms of investor interest and tourism dollars, Thailand does not need another reason to be further shunned.
