Elvis on American Idol - how they did it
Ok, here’s how they brought Elvis back to sing a duet with Celine Dion on American Idol. They used rotoscoping - tracing Elvis’ outline and superimposing him onto the AI stage. Much like how it was done for the movie Forrest Gump - who met John Lennon, Richard Nixon and other famous dead people. However, they went one step further than Forrest Gump. They used a body double as well.
Celine sang the song several times without an audience and without anyone next to her. Then she sang it with an Elvis body double beside her, looking in his direction on cue. Then these were combined with the Elvis footage using rotoscoping during editing. Wide shots of the preformance are of the body double. Very cool.
