Blake Lewis most original American Idol contestant
It was Rock night, specifically Bon Jovi night and a potentially disastrous night for American Idol contestants, non of whom are rockers since the only rocker-chick wannabe Gina got booted out.
It’s basically silly to have a specific theme each round which makes the contestants sing different music genres. In reality, hardly any pop singer sings across genres. I was a bit worried for Melinda Doolittle but being the pro that she is, she pulled off a Tina Turner inspired performance admirably. Jordin could not handle that definitive Bon Jovi anthemn Livin’ On A Prayer but somehow she managed to endear herself enough to audiences by being self-deprecating and avoided being voted out.
The show stopper of the night belonged to Blake Lewis, the beatboxer who mashed up You Give Love A Bad Name. Now I’m not a beatbox fan but will tolerate and even appreciate some strategic beatboxing and Blake Lewis did just that. He did an amazing version which I like much better than the dinosaur rock original.

[...] Blake Lewis uses beatbox sparingly and to good effect. When he does, it’s always a winner. Apart from his brave, innovative version of You Give Love A Bad Name by Bon Jovi in the last performance, he also did some mashed up beatbox for Time Of The Season by The Zombies. [...]

[...] As far as being an American Idol, Blake Lewis has the whole package for easy marketing. Although vocally, he’s not outstanding, he has that extra talent of beat box which when used appropriately does make a song contemporary and special. He shouldn’t fee too bad though cos everyone, including Melinda Doolittle had possibly their worst night ever. I hope he gets enough votes to stay in the competition. [...]

[...] I know lots of people think LaKisha Jones is a fantastic vocalist, but I beg to differ. Sure she has a powerhouse voice but she doesn’t really know how to interpret a song the way Melinda Doolittle does. And it looks like America knows that too, judging from the results. Blake Lewis has his own supporters because of his beatbox, but Melinda Doolittle has pure talent, not that she needs American Idol any longer now that her awesome talent has been heard. [...]

I really like Blake but I don’t think that he’s the most original American Idol contestant. I think David Archuleta is.
