Blake Lewis restrained beatbox a winning formula

blake.jpgBlake Lewis, the beatboxer on American Idol has successfully integrated his signature beatbox by not letting it overshadow his vocals. It’s a smart and important move as American Idol is a singing contest, as Simon Cowell always liked to remind audiences, never mind that in the past, the better singers have been voted off over lesser vocalists. That’s the way the cookie crumbles when you put the power of democratic voting into the hands of the masses.

Blake Lewis uses beatbox sparingly and to good effect. When he does, it’s always a winner. Apart from his brave, innovative version of You Give Love A Bad Name by Bon Jovi in the last performance, he also did some very nice mashed up beatbox for Time Of The Season by The Zombies.

Randy Jackson was right in saying that the Blake Lewis beatbox was getting old because he was doing it for every song now. Neither songs, the classic BeeGees, You Should Be Dancing and some tuneless and obscureThis Is Where I Came In worked with the beatboxing. [...]
