Desperate Housewives insults Filipino meds
In the new season of Desperate Housewives, Teri Hatcher’s character Susan Mayer goes for a medical checkup and insults the Filipino medics. Now the Philippine government is mad at the ABC network for the slur.
Filipino consul in Los Angeles Mary Jo Bernardo Aragon was so pissed that she wrote a letter to ABC networks saying that the statement isn’t true and that Filipino medical workers are in demand all over the world. “The US recognizes the students of Philippine medical and nursing schools and in general, does not require additional schooling in the US for Filipino healthcare professionals,” she added.
I can understand how the dialogue can piss off Filipinos – surely the writers know that too. Maybe they just don’t care because they know that Filipinos aren’t going to strap on some dynamite and walk into American restaurants and embassies and blow themselves up.
I wonder if we are going to get to see the scene when Desperate Housewives airs in Singapore.
