Blog Action Day

October 15th, 2007 emigre Posted in Internet No Comments »

Today is Blog Action Day. On October 15th - Blog Action Day, bloggers around the web will unite to put a single important issue on everyone’s mind. In its inaugural year, Blog Action Day will be co-ordinating bloggers to tackle the issue of the environment.

I thought I’d bring some humour to my post contribution for this day with a George Carlin video but make no mistake, I’m all for conserving to the best of our abilities even though I do think it’s a losing battle. As proof of my support :D I’ve been putting up the Live Earth banner for a while now.

LED device in Boston bomb scare on eBay

February 2nd, 2007 emigre Posted in News, Internet, Gadgets 1 Comment »

emigrestudio.com - mooninites

The electronic device which caused Boston to shut down in a high alert bomb scare has gone on eBay. The LED devices featuring cartoon moon men with an obscene gesture were part of a guerrilla marketing campaign to promote the late-night Adult Swim cartoon “Aqua Teen Hunger Force”. The moon men, or Mooninites, as they’re known to the show’s faithful, are delinquent outer-space men who make frequent appearances on the programme.

At least 4 devices are being sold on eBay with starting bids of US$1,999. Also on sale are T-shirts with the Mooninite graphic and the text “Up Yours, Boston”. The devices have been in place in many major cities across the US but only in Boston did such an incident occur.

The creators of the Mooninites device are pleading not guilty to felony charges. One of the creators is a Belarusian, has a green card and is seeking asylum in the United States. We all know what his chances of getting asylum are like now.

YouTube to pay users

January 31st, 2007 emigre Posted in News, Internet, YouTube No Comments »

YouTube has announced that it will pay users of the video-sharing website. Details of amount to be paid and how it works have not been revealed but the system will be introduced within months.

This could be the end of YouTube as we know it. With the pay-users model, it can be safely assumed that no copyright videos will be allowed. Currently, a large majority of videos uploaded are movies, TV shows and copyright material. Although YouTube has already started deleting many of such videos, users are uploading them faster than they can be deleted and there is still the lively community based around sharing movies and TV shows not available in some countries which grew YouTube into the behemoth it is today.

To take this away would signal its death knell. That would be a sad day for the millions who have depended on YouTube as the source for all videos, both currently and non-current, although drastic changes have been expected ever since Google bought YouTube. Google wouldn’t just let the daily millions of eyeballs go to waste with a few ads that no one even notices, let alone click on them.

Although many other video sites have since sprung up, none has come close to YouTube in terms of number of videos and users. Maybe someone will be courageous enough to take over the void when the day comes that YouTube is no longer the mothership of all videos.

Internet knocked out in Asia

December 29th, 2006 emigre Posted in News, Internet No Comments »

A 7.1 magnitude undersea earthquake off the southern coast of Taiwan on Tuesday damaged several fibre optic cables and disrupted telephone and internet connections for Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and Thailand. Taiwan is one of the major communication cable gateways to the US.

Traffic was diverted to other lines resulting in major traffic jams. Connecting to Yahoo, Google and MSN was impossible up til this morning where it seems like most sites are loading with some connections still patchy.

The first thing that got me suspicious there was something wrong was when I checked my email. There was no spam. And then I could not log on to my blog. This was not unusual, seeing as how my web host has been offline 3 times since I signed up in August. I was about to send in a support ticket when I realised that both Yahoo! and Google could not be found. There was definitely something big going down.

It was as if I had travelled back to 1989.
