It wasn’t exactly a nail-biting finale. Jordin Sparks clearly out sang Blake Lewis in the American Idol grand finals. Jordin Sparks had better song choices including the last song which both she and Blake had to sing.

The 3rd song is a typically sappy, sentimental number written specially for the American Idol finale which the winner would release as the 1st single – check out its also typically supposedly inspiring but ultimately dumb title – This Is My Now – and super cheesy lyrics about being willing to settle for less in the past, but this is my NOW. Jeez.

I’m almost thankful that Melinda Doolittle isn’t in the finals so that she doesn’t have to sing this awful song. It was more suited to the Jordin Sparks style of singing and Blake Lewis was already disadvantaged with 1 song down.

In fact, it was so painfully obvious (see video) that Blake Lewis had a terrible time singing the song, as Simon Cowell astutely pointed out, he did as much as he could but clearly it wasn’t the type of song suited for Blake. I actually felt really sorry that this song was being inflicted on Blake.

Blake’s choice of She Will Be Loved unfortunately did not do much for him in terms of bringing out the wow factor – it was more of an OK, can do performance which left him with the song that did wow people in previous rounds – You Give Love A Bad Name but the audience had already heard it only recently and it did not bring anything new to his repetoire.

Everyone except me was blown away by Broken Wing from Jordin Sparks and the competition was pretty much over. All the judges concurred that Jordin is the winner. Since proceedings were kinda boring, I started star-spotting and among those I saw in the audience included Dennis Richards, Marlee Matlin, Olivia Nwton-John, Wentworth Miller and Kathy Lee Griffith.

Due to exchange her designer togs for prison stripes on June 5, Paris Hilton was seen doing some last minute partying at L.A. hotspot Teddy’s on Saturday around midnight with on-again, off-again beau Stavros Niarchos and a group of friends.

Having given up pleading for an overturn on her jail sentence with California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, she has accepted her fate and although her jail time has been shortened from the original 45 to 23 days due to prison overcrowding, Paris Hilton will no doubt be spending her down time planning for some way to make a business opportunity out of the whole experience. She was seen holding the inspirational business book The Power of Now and the Holy Bible.

The Power of Now is a bestseller about business, speed, competition, technology, and success in an increasingly global networked society. Hmm…all that dumb blonde image may well be just a act. After all, she did make a hugely profitable business out of basically not doing anything but partying and just by being famous.

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie brought some serious glam to Cannes when they appeared on the red carpet. Mr and Mrs Perfect had a thousand flash bulbs going off in quick succession as they posed for journalists. Angelina is there to promote her new movie A Mighty Heart which is based on murdered journalist Daniel Pearl, while Brad is there to promote Ocean’s 13, the third installment of the series.

Brad looks like Robert Redford in The Great Gatsby.

The best show on TV has just ended its Season 2 run. The Office (US) is such an incredible show in that there are no fancy sets, no A-list stars and no guns. It just relies on good old solid scriptwriting that creates unique characters that we love to love and hate.

We are way behind as Season 3 has just ended in the US. Anyway, fans are left with this heartbreaking cliffhanger where Jim finally lets Pam know his true feelings. Season 3 will probably start sometime a few months down the road but those who can’t wait can watch what happens next.

Dreamz broke his promise to give the Immunity Idol to Yau Man in the finals of Survivor Fiji to book himself a place in the final 3 for the million dollars. Dreamz is as dumb as he looks. Does he really think anyone will vote for him for going back on his word, which we all now know is worth about as much as spit on the ground?

In doing so, he did not guarantee himself a 1 in 3 shot at a million dollars like he thought he did. By showing the world what a stinking, lying snake he is, and a Christian one at that, he merely guaranteed himself hopefully, a lifetime of being scorned and reviled, and about as much chance at the million as any member of the jury. A big fat ZERO.

Loved how Boo paid tribute to Yau Man, acknowledging that Yau Man is the one who deserved the million dollars and how Boo grilled Dreamz about giving his word as a Christian. Dreamz hawed and hemmed and couldn’t give a direct answer. Go Boo!

If Dreamz had any ounce of integrity or honour, which he clearly has NONE, and a chance to redeem himself a little, he would at least return the truck to Yau Man with an apology. But no. Born in the hood, always a hood and a snake in the mud.

Nothing better can be said for Earl either, who had been a long-time ally of Yau Man but ultimately betrayed him too. Ironically, Earl asked for the respect vote because of how he played the game and had voted out Yau Man because he knew he wouldn’t win with Yau Man in the last 3 with him.

But precisely by doing so, he deserves no respect. He gets the million dollars not because he is worthy or that others are less worthy. He won ONLY because he is the least unworthy.

No tears for Melinda Doolittle, the best vocalist on American Idol. As Paula Abdul so rightly puts it, it’s time for her to go on and have a great career. Many are saying America is not ready for 2 black girls in the finals and things might have turned out differently if she were white. So, sorry Obama, you might as well put the millions for your campaign to better use.

I think that though vocally, Blake Lewis is not that strong, his unique beatboxing makes him interesting and I can’t wait to see what he will be doing for the finals. Jordin Sparks, on the other hand, I think there will be no surprises – she’ll probably be doing diva-esque songs by Whitney Houston and the like.

Comparing Jordin Sparks with Melinda Doolittle, Jordin has a definite appeal to the younger set, although Melinda is a far better singer. You can see Simon Cowell reacting to the announcement that Melinda was going home. Pretty much like how I felt. But America has always sent the best singers on American Idol home.

I hope Blake Lewis wins just because he’s so much more an interesting singer than Jordin Sparks.
